Embracing My True Self: The Journey from Perfection to Authenticity

We often find ourselves playing multiple roles in life, each demanding a different version of ourselves. We usually succumb to these expectations, losing sight of our true selves. But the journey to self-discovery begins with embracing our authentic selves.

I was a strict leader at work, but at home, I aimed to be the cool, fun mom. Over time, the lines blurred. I became more relaxed at work while overly stern at home. Neither approach served me well; instead, it disconnected and frustrated me.

It was then that I realised I had to make a change. But what did “being myself” really mean? Was it about expressing how I felt, even if it might make others uncomfortable? Was it simply a matter of being “me” no matter what? These questions swirled around in my mind until, one day, I made a decision—I decided to be authentic.

What does it mean to be authentic? Authenticity is more than just a buzzword. It’s about being genuine, real, and unfiltered. It’s about not adhering to cultural norms or pretending to be someone you’re not. But this leap into authenticity didn’t come without reason. I was worn out of feeling constrained. I longed for deeper connections, true freedom, and the space to express myself fully. Authenticity is a powerful tool that can lead to greater self-acceptance, stronger relationships, and overall happiness.

Why is Authenticity Important?

  • Self-Acceptance: Embracing your authentic self helps you accept who you are, flaws and all. This self-acceptance can lead to increased self-esteem and confidence.
  • Stronger Relationships: When you’re authentic, people can connect with you deeper. They appreciate your honesty and genuineness.
  • Increased Happiness: Being true to yourself can lead to a greater sense of fulfilment and satisfaction in life.
  • Reduced Stress: Authenticity can help reduce stress and anxiety, as you’re no longer trying to be someone you’re not.

Here are a few key lessons I learned on my journey toward authenticity:

1.Taking Responsibility for My Actions and Reactions

Authenticity demands that we own our choices. Being true to yourself means there’s no hiding behind excuses. I learned that taking responsibility strengthens character and empowers you to respond with integrity in any situation.

2. Boosting My Self-Confidence

Regardless of how uncomfortable it may be, standing up for your beliefs is part of being authentic. Over time, this boosted my self-confidence. I became more assured in expressing my thoughts and opinions, knowing they reflected the real me.

3. Maintaining a Positive Mindset at Work and Home

Authenticity shifted my mindset. I stopped trying to fit into predefined roles and instead focused on being positive and consistent in my personal and professional life. This connection brought about a sense of balance that wasn’t there before.

4. Embracing Values of Integrity and Truthfulness

Being authentic means that your deeds should match your core values. Integrity and truthfulness became my guiding principles. I no longer needed to mould myself to fit different situations; instead, I let my values steer my decisions.

5. Creating Deeper Connections with Others

When you show up as your true self, you naturally attract genuine relationships. Being vulnerable and authentic opens the door for deeper and more meaningful connections, both personally and professionally.

6. Finding Freedom in Imperfection

The biggest realisation was that authenticity is not about perfection. It’s about embracing your flaws and being willing to learn and grow. I discovered freedom in allowing myself to be imperfect, knowing that true strength lies in vulnerability.

The path to authenticity isn’t always easy, but it’s worth every step. Being true to yourself is your most powerful asset.
